connecting the world one person at a time
What was the envy of all most every state in the country and one of the few successful programs that WA State TBI Act "the tommy manning act" has produced feels the shock wave of much less funding even though funds are available in the dedicated account for support groups. The state is set to take funding back to 2008-2009 rates even after the extreme growth and quality satisfaction of the program. As leaders of groups are finding out just how significant the cuts are most are figuring how to downsize as well as which groups to discontinue providing.
Just shortly after the organization leader Penny Condoll received the golden slipper award for her award winning programs and supports for those living with brain injury the amount that support groups was cut in half, that will teach you for doing to good of a job.
We are on the 5th program coordinator for the state of Washington TBI Program and every time as the guard changes in the states TBI Program so does how they do business. The state went from 9 support groups providing services for a couple hundred people to over 60 groups serving thousands at a couple of dollars a person. It does seem the state either did not realize what they were funding or they want to deliberately downsize or destabilize these support for political reasons, many of the survivor lead groups think its discrimination because the majority of these groups our lead by those living with brain injury. Let us hope it is a oversite and can be resolved meanwhile groups are on hold in many cases and discussion of what groups to cut and eliminate if this stands. I think right now the best thing we can do is reach out to the TBI Council and our legislators with this simple message
FUND BRAIN INJURY SUPPORT GROUPS AT LAST YEARS LEVELS OR MORE
