How TBI and ABI Changed My Life Forever

HOW Traumatic Brain Injury and Acquired brain Injury Changed My Life Forever

I am brain injured as a result of being struck by a van after singing at a benefit concert for Muscular Dystrophy during my senior year of high school in New York (the Traumatic Brain Injury [TBI]). I had four brain operations within six…

EMPOWERMENT: Possible Medicaid Cuts and What You Can Do

I have reposted an alert from The Arc, the nation's premier advocacy organization for persons with developmental disabilities, for the subject applies to persons with disabilities of all varieties.

Right now, Congress and the President are debating how to cut federal spending to bring down the deficit. Unfortunately – and almost unbelievably – people with intellectual and… Continue

I just realized....

I will probably die without ever having seen the ocean.  For years I have said to myself "God didn't let me die because He knows I've never seen the ocean!"

Nope. Wrong again. I know I'm still here for a reason. You don't survive brain surgery and three near death experiences in one year unless there is a really good reason for being here. I just can't figure out what that reason is anymore.

The saddest thing for me is this: My son..my oldest child lives out of state. He won't…

Keep Your Brain Alive – Neurobics to help prevent memory loss and increase mental fitness

Neurobics? What’s that? Never heard of it before now. Neurobics is an exercise program to help you maintain a continuing level of mental Fitness, strength, and flexibility as you get older. This program calls for “presenting the brain with non-routine or unexpected experiences using various combinations of your physical senses – vision, smell, taste, touch, and hearing – as well as your emotional ‘sense’.” In other words, Neurobics activates different areas of the brain and makes the… Continue

Dating loving someone with a TBI

I fell in love with a woman who has a TBI. I research everything everything. But I did not research TBI’s. As much as I am ashamed to say it out loud as to write it. the reasons why I didn’t –She looked “normal” I am disabled myself and worked with others who live with disabilities. I knew better. But most of my friends or people I new with TBI you could tell. With this woman you could not and the second reason why I didn’t research was because of my own ego and pride. I now I wish I…

My First TBI Post

This seems so strange to me...blogging about my brain injuries.  I have another blog but I don't feel like those people want to hear about the "new me". They still expect me to be a jewelry designer and instructor. They still expect me to put on a brave face even when I am sad, lonely, or frustrated with my "new" brain.

I can't keep going this way. Being around "normal" people makes me feel alone. They can't understand what I've lost...myself, my identity, my skills, so many…

A BELATED 4TH OF JULY GREETING TO EVERYONE

Happy 4th of July Everyone,

My wish for everyone and myself is that beginning today we do what we can to take back some of the freedom that was taken from us. How many of us have given the keys to our lives to people who have not helped move our lives, our futures in the right direction. How many of us have been to hospitals or rehab... facilities where, because of your/my TBI diagnosis, are not listened to...not heard. How many of us have…

Squirrels and other diversions

The other night, I watched the Pixar movie “Up” with my teenage children for the “umpteenth” time.  We cried with the loss of the beloved wife and cheered when the old man and the little Boy Scout became forever friends. It is a wonderful movie filled with the circle of life, love, loss, happiness and even vengeance. I love it.

The part that made me sit down and write this though wasn’t the plot or the message behind the sweet movie, it was instead the character of the…

"That is a brilliant maneuver! You won't be constantly reminded of what you had and unfortunately lost. Everyone who has suffered a TBI has lost plenty and being constantly reminded is not good. I recently cleaned out my apartment recently, and…"
