My Dad's TBI & Other Related Background
Forty years ago, right before I was born, my dad was in an auto accident resulting in a TBI. I grew up hearing about what a nice person he used to be, which I found odd, because he was usually still a pretty nice person. I knew he had “brain damage,” as he called it. Of course, this was usually said by way of consolation, and to my dad's credit, he himself never made such excuses for his behavior, and have many fond memories of his affectionate…

Thanks to the administrator that accepted my application to the network. I will drop a little info on myself.
3 May 2009 I was reborn with a Severe Closed head TBI. I was coma induced for three weeks, because I was combative. I have a piece of hardware in my skull at about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide. I have a scare from the bottom of my sternum to just below the belly button and a Trac scare from being intubated. I went from 220 lbs to 177lbs. I still like my naps.

Rappaport's Rule: When most people agree with you, worry.
"A crucial task for anyone interested in social/community problems is to look for paradox so as to discover antinomies [a contradiction in a law, or between two equally binding laws].... Once discovered, we will often find that one side or the other has been ignored and its opposite emphasized. To discover which paradoxes of social life are founded on antinomy and which are founded on absurdity and false reasoning is part of our job. That is the understanding part. The action part of our…

This realization has taken 3 years, but has been perhaps the most important step taken in this recovery. Just as I grieved the fatality of my husband as a result of the car crash (we would have celebrated our one-year wedding anniversary while I was in the 6-week coma), I also had to grieve the loss of my former self.
Like any death, it's a sadness that sneaks up on me. Especially when I'm confused or dealing with neural fatigue. Whenever experiencing anger,…
