Woo Hoo! I crossed the finish line. . . now what?

I must confess that I have neglected a lot during the past year-and-a-half.  I have neglected my three kids, each special and wonderful in his or her own way, and each needing extra input from Dad.  I have neglected my mom, who has given mightily to aid me in my quest to finish my my Masters in Social Work (I'm sure it's just ego that makes me think that I am a rarity, a survivor of serious TBI who went on to get a graduate degree, but maybe that little shred of ego was somehow empowering,…See More

November 1, 2011

I met for supervision today with the MSW @ The Arc of Spokane.  I admire her, for she is focused and perceptive—these are among the qualities I hope to develop as a Social Worker.

I forget what the remark I made was that triggered her memory, but she told me that she had been watching “Glee,” and it reminded her of me.  After digressing for a little while, I asked her how it reminded her of me, and she…

EMPOWERMENT: Possible Medicaid Cuts and What You Can Do

I have reposted an alert from The Arc, the nation's premier advocacy organization for persons with developmental disabilities, for the subject applies to persons with disabilities of all varieties.

Right now, Congress and the President are debating how to cut federal spending to bring down the deficit. Unfortunately – and almost unbelievably – people with intellectual and… Continue

On acceptance, ownership and empowerment

Being a TBI Survivor is a mixed bag.  On the one hand, hey, you survived.  You are more than just a memory.

On the other hand, life as you knew it is likely over.  This poses an unimaginably large issue for the majority of survivors, I'm sure.  It did for me.  I coped by denying that the injury was real (I maintained it was all a dream), then by making silly little "magical deals" with myself ("If I can do this before…

Why do I get up again after each time the rug is pulled out from under me?

As I see it, my brain-injury has not been entirely a bad thing. For example, I have a lot more empathy for people who are not on the end of the spectrum that our society judges as "successful," or "well-adapted." Also, I meet people very easily (part of the social affect caused by having an injury in the right temporal and parietal lobes, I'm sure). And I have become "Indefatigable Man!"

I say this only half in jest. I just don't seem to know when to quit. That is evident…

I am very impressed with your page. I think that I will become increasingly involved with the survivor community, due, in large part, to this resource!
