Hello all. I am posting this message to say to survivors, their family members, caregivers that a traumatic brain injury is the worst of all injuries. Today is the 9th year anniversary of my injury when I fell off a ladder: 1st month in a hospital in a medically induced coma, multiple surgeries including a craniotomy; 2nd month in a different hospital to wake up from the coma, removing the trach, starting cognitive, speech and physical therapy; 3rd month in another different hospital, for…See More

Maybe a little about myself.

In October 2003, I fell off a ladder when cleaning gutters on my house. A month in the first hospital, which including a medically induced coma and many surgeries; a month in a second hospital where the doctors/nurses/therapists were trying to see if I would be able to eat/walk/talk; another month in a third hospital where the doctors/nurses/therapists knew I would eat & walk but speech was almost impossible (the family tells me I talked like the swedish chef in the Muppets). After that third month, I was able to move back home, but had to start occupational & speech therapy right way. Fortunately, I was able to start my therapy in the Courage Center (Golden Valley) which was what I needed. There are a couple therapists who I will never forget, but all of them were tremendous (the Courage Center therapists are angels if you ask me). In 2004, I starting working in my “day” job for 4 hours a week in April; 8 hours a week in May; 12 hours a week in June; 20 hours a week in July; 28 hours a week in August; and then 40 hours a week in September 2004. Oh yeah, full time. Thankfully the company I work for gave me all the time I needed. I also had, and still have, a second job as an instructor for adult education photography classes. I wasn’t able to start teaching again until January 2005, but only because even though my family/friends/co-workers understood that I had, and still have, speech problems, I really couldn’t expect students to understand why their “instructor” had problems talking correctly. Currently my speech problems are minor so teaching isn’t really a problem, although I do tell my “students” that if I’m saying something that doesn’t make any sense at all, to let me know so I can try again.

So what else? Right now I’m not sure and it’s time to start making dinner at home, so we will have to talk later. Take care of yourself and your family.

8th year brainday

Well, today is the 8th year anniversary of my traumatic brain injury. Think I’m going to stop calling today an anniversary, and just call it a “brainday”, one word just like “Elvis” is only one word (was thinking about calling it a tbiday that that word doesn’t sing). Thankfully my 7th year was a “normal” year for me (if such a thing exists). I did get myself more involved with local “survivor support groups”; helped with a family who had a family member survive a TBI;…

Walk for Thought Day, Minnesota

Hello all, Been quite awhile since I’ve posted anything here, so let me tell you what I’m doing now. Have become  a member of  the Brain Injury Association of Mn., and a member of the traumatic brain injury support group in the Golden Valley (Mn) Courage Center. I also attended a conference for the Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) for their Patients & Families Care Center. An interesting conference to say the least: a full day where patients or family told HCMC staff concerning what…

Spring is my favorite time of year

Hello all. Been quite awhile since my last post, but thought (to myself) it’s time to write something that hopefully will make sense or help other survivors. Winter has gone and now it’s spring, so I started my walking trips since the weather is better. Before my injury I was a full-time runner, at least 5 to 8 miles a day but running is something I can’t do anymore because my balance is not good at all. Even walking can be a problem, which is why I carry a walking stick with me. I really…

Richard, thanks for the words about my family unfortunately they do get it you are. Right but they are very angry with me out the condition and are tired of it. They want it fixed now, like I don't. It's frustrating when I try to express my words they just go unheard. I'll keep trying but thank you , u do understand I just wish they do. Make it a great day denise

Dreams are dreams and I don't remember many of mine either. I just feel much less rested when I wake up sometimes.

Think about it- life changes are very deep and there are some close calls but little is unusual and nothing is new; failure is seldom fatal and few decisions are final. The truth is still the truth! How we handle the truth is very important! - Roy
