I have been going to the doctor long enough now that I feel less like a patient and more like a test subject. It is strange that with all the TBI patients out there that my doctors would be more…Continue

TBI Does Not Define Me

TBI does not define me, it was an event in my life. while the effects still linger, they do not limit my potential. this week I broke a world record. you can see my interview at the record breaking event athttp://www.abc4.com/content/news/slc/story/Orem-woman-overcomes-odds-to-create-world-record/gCBb62Ef6EazdnCZ-naFaQ.cspxThey did an entire segment on my TBI.See More

Hairy Holidays?!

Holiday Survival is crucial, especially if you have a family at home with you. The trouble with the holidays is unrealistic expectations and stress. The first stress reliever that I do is order the presents online and gift-wrapped. If the sending is stressful skip it or pay a greeting card company to do it for you. The big meal can be ordered from the deli at the grocery store. Remember to get lots of sleep and plan extra days around big events. Don’t over schedule. Make sure you have plenty of…See More

Sunny Side Up

One of the habits that my doctor started for me is to eat eggs Sunnyside up in the morning. I eat the vegetarian, grain fed, free-range, Omega-3, brown eggs. The doctor told me that the birds digest the omega threes and then pass them on to me in the eggs in a form that is easily accepted by the body. Leaving the yoke liquid is key because cooking it destroys the nutrients and proteins I am trying to gain. Then my body uses those omega threes to coat and insolate my nerve cells allowing for…

Don't put the scooter down Inez.....I mean, wear a good helmet.....a bright Jacket to be seen........boot, whatever to help you in case you do have a fall....but...."Do it for you - If "you" think it's right for you.....Not because of other people and their statements.....And people will always have "their Opinion" - regardless.....But then if you stop.. riding it....because it helps you, not them.....Then you'll always have a regret....My secret, I've rode across some pretty big bridges in Portland, Oregon......and I like to find new places to ride....My secret....I take a close friend with me.....right inside me.....and I speak to Jesus whenever I feel the need.......So please, as long as your "alert....wearing the right safety equipment.........you have a nice scooter.....it's safe.....then do it!  But safely!  I mean I actually got hit by a car sitting at an intersection and I was walking my bike across the street...and this lady just accelerated and my front wheel got crushed.....and I started yelling and pounding her car hood....she just did'nt see me......So now, I make darn sure I make eye-contact when I cross any street. And the darn thing is...I was "walking" my bike across the street....So, I mean, living life is a gamble - regardless......So, "keep on Scooting"!

And Inez, I was just looking at your pictures.....did you work in an office or something?  You look like an Admin Supervisor or something......many years ago I worked in Admin.....But, I like the pictures.....It looks like you have a great life.....Myself, I actually lost approx 15 or so years of Long Term memory......I worked in Admin in the Army....Army admin is nuts!  Everything is "exact"...no mistakes......one intensely disciplined system that is crazy....I was thinking of the complexities of my past lives at times....that stuff would "knock me Out Now"......Anyway, God bless you and take care...Phil

Yea Inez....I rode my bicycle to the store to buy some things and, when I do go to a store to buy food....I walk around searching and searching for stuff I need...and it is a definite tiresome event...anyway I saw a lady that lives in the same building I live at and I went and talked to her to be polite....we were talking and at some point she looked at me attentively and asked me "Are you okay"?  and I just laughed it off and said, well, I think I just get confused by walking around the store"......but, she was giving me some strange looks.....and that kind of stuck with me the rest of the day....It makes me wonder, how I do appear to people I meet on the street, or in a coffee house, etc.....And, I mean, I do seem "drunk" at times, plus, the slurred speech which happens.....you know?  Sometimes people can be very questionable and truthfully, I believe that is part of the difficulty of trying to be "Normal" and fit into society again.....I mean, heck, I wish I had had a bottle of wine in my back pocket at that instant, took a swig and asked her if she wanted some....Ha!  Anyway, I'm gonna talk with her in the bldg Breakroom (used for elderly/disabled tenants) and tell her again of ,my TBI.......But, I think part of the problem with TBI is due to the complexity and understanding of the complexities of the human brain......I think they "Just don't get it sometimes".  And whatever you do don't ever tell them of brain damage.....and say something like "brain Neuron"......cause I notice that they get a look of total confusion when you use words like "neuron"....and go into some like of staring at you "puzzled" frenzy.....Crazy man!
