Hello everyone! I am happy to have found this forum as I have been struggling to identify myself after a series of strokes I had at 29 years old due to an aortic myxoma (tumor on the aortic valve).
Other than the scar from the open heart surgery required to remove the tumor that caused the strokes, I have no noticeable long term effects from the strokes. I had a series of three strokes causing loss of control of the left side of my body, inability to put together a sentence, and general confusion. Fortunately the final stroke occurred after I had arrived at the hospital and was in triage with many doctors and nurses present.
I do know that I am different now however. I have not been able to cry or feel strong emotions since the incident. I fell into serious alcoholism for several years following the incident, further complicating my mental condition.
I am now over one year sober and in a state of mind to take back control of my life and rediscover who I am.
My incident led to the failure of a seven year relationship with a girlfriend. Several years later I was able to ask her if she noticed a perceivable change in my personality after the strokes to which she replied, "yes".
