Living with a brain injury and being Misunderstood, Maligned and Manipulated Part 1

Hello my friends. I hope you have been doing well. A little while ago I completed an article – an 8 part series -- that I have been working on for approximately 2 ½ weeks. I divided the article into parts because of the length of the article. Please let me encourage you to read through each and every part oft he article. I believe you will be able to identify with me as you read through each part of the article my friend. By reading through each part of the article, you will be able to…See More

Survivor

I would like to be of service to you

Hello Friend,
I would like to be of service to you. Let me introduce myself. My name is Craig J. Phillips and I have lived with an invisible disability for nearly 42 years. As a traumatic brain injury thrivor I have succeeded beyond all reasonable expectations. Although I was not expected to succeed beyond high school, I went on to obtain both my undergraduate and graduate degrees.

I am now a master's level rehabilitation counselor, an advocate, a peer mentor, a life coach, a motivational speaker and an internationally published author. As a thrivor my mission and vision is to encourage, motivate and empower people with and with out disabilities to thrive in life -- regardless of how their lives may look at the present time. For several examples please read my Testimonial / Endorsement Page http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/testimonialsendorsements/.

Per my specific circumstances, I sustained a severe brain injury in 1967 when I was 10 years old. I remained in a coma for 3 weeks. I had significant damage to my right frontal lobe, a severe brain contusion with brain stem involvement. I underwent brain and skull surgery after completing traction and being placed in a Spica -- full body cast-- for my left femur fracture. In 1967 neurological rehabilitation was not available so I was essentially on my own.

With the encouragement of family, hard work and determination I taught myself how to walk, talk, read, write and speak in complete sentences. In follow up to brain and skull surgery I underwent several EEG's and a battery of cognitive and psycho social testing. The results from the tests were shared with my parents, but not with me. The results indicated that I would probably be unable to succeed beyond high school academically. Nevertheless I went on to obtain both my undergraduate and graduate degrees.

On February 6, 2007 I created Second Chance to Live -- at the encouragement of a professional friend -- to share my experience, strength and hope. The focus of Second Chance to Live is to encourage, motivate and empower the reader to move beyond surviving to thriving regardless of how circumstances may look at the present time. Please consider sharing my message of hope with the individuals that you serve. My web address is http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/.

Currently, I have 387 articles with in my Site Map http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/site-map/

Over the past 24 months material from Second Chance to Live has been published through out the United States, in Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.
As a brain injury survivor, who has achieved far beyond all reasonable expectations and a master's level rehabilitation counselor, I am credibly qualified to speak before both traumatic brain injury thrivors, their families and professionals that serve them with authority.

For more information please visit my Speakers Page http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/public-speaking/ and my Media Page http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/press/

If you would like to hear interviews of me you may visit my Interview Page http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/interview/.

I have added a feature to Second Chance to Live to enable individuals to translate Second Chance to Live into their language http://wp.me/p3atD-FM

I look forward to being of service to you and to the individuals that you serve.

Thank you for your time and kindness.

Have a simply phenomenal day!

Thank you Craig. What a story you have. My injury caused damage to my right frontal lobe, but they had to remove a piece of it. I'm grateful it was on that side though because I have a masters in counseling & worked 15 yrs in the field and even though I can't work now all that info is intact. I liked your site thanks for sharing.
