I would like to be of service to you. Let me introduce myself. My name is Craig J. Phillips and I have lived with an invisible disability for nearly 42 years. As a traumatic brain injury thrivor I have succeeded beyond all reasonable expectations. Although I was not expected to succeed beyond high school, I went on to obtain both my undergraduate and graduate degrees.
I am now a master's level rehabilitation counselor, an advocate, a peer mentor, a life coach, a motivational speaker and an internationally published author. As a thrivor my mission and vision is to encourage, motivate and empower people with and with out disabilities to thrive in life -- regardless of how their lives may look at the present time. For several examples please read my Testimonial / Endorsement Page http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/testimonialsendorsements/
Per my specific circumstances, I sustained a severe brain injury in 1967 when I was 10 years old. I remained in a coma for 3 weeks. I had significant damage to my right frontal lobe, a severe brain contusion with brain stem involvement. I underwent brain and skull surgery after completing traction and being placed in a Spica -- full body cast-- for my left femur fracture. In 1967 neurological rehabilitation was not available so I was essentially on my own.
With the encouragement of family, hard work and determination I taught myself how to walk, talk, read, write and speak in complete sentences. In follow up to brain and skull surgery I underwent several EEG's and a battery of cognitive and psycho social testing. The results from the tests were shared with my parents, but not with me. The results indicated that I would probably be unable to succeed beyond high school academically. Nevertheless I went on to obtain both my undergraduate and graduate degrees.
On February 6, 2007 I created Second Chance to Live -- at the encouragement of a professional friend -- to share my experience, strength and hope. The focus of Second Chance to Live is to encourage, motivate and empower the reader to move beyond surviving to thriving regardless of how circumstances may look at the present time. Please consider sharing my message of hope with the individuals that you serve. My web address is http://secondchancetolive.wordpress.com/
