IMPORTANT HAS YOUR CHILD UNDER 18 BEEN DENIED DDD ELIGIBILITY There might be hope now
Disability rights of Washington is investigating Division of Developmental Disabilities eligibility criteria for the category of “other conditions.” I am attaching the DDD policy and list of conditions for you to review. As you can see, TBI is a “rejected” condition for eligibility purposes. We believe that people who have had a head injury before the age of 18 should be able to be considered for DDD services based on their functional needs. We base this on our understanding of Medicaid and American’s with Disabilities Act law. During our investigation, we are looking to talk with families and individuals with TBI who have been denied DDD services under the other condition category. If people you work with or folks on your list serve have been denied DDD services, they can call me or Emily Cooper at the number below. We can share what we know about the policy and what we are planning to do about it. Thanks for helping us get the word out!

Comment by Alicia Payne on February 11, 2012 at 3:07am This sounds very similar to what I'm trying to do. Except with Survived to Vote, which is part of TBI Raiders, I created it to get disability issues out in an election and out to those presently in office. With TBI Raiders, once we get the volunteers, then we'll be able to file for a 501 (C) 3 status. I would like the organization to be a national non-profit helping students and young adults who have sustained a TBI. Next month on the 26th and 28th there will be two different forums going on which have the purpose of educating others on TBI & PTSD. On the 26th we will be addressing the problems then on the 28th we will be finding solutions. Something I would like to have is information about organizations and programs in other states to have readily available for those who come to the forum...which I need help with getting access in terms of contact information for those groups.
In the Oklahoma Self-Advocacy Network that I am a member of, there are a couple of people I know real well who are part of the DD Council. I will see them again on the 22nd at our next meeting for the Network. So even though I won't be able to attend, if there is something I can do in Oklahoma, please let me know.
